Neda Maritime Agency Co. Ltd., is one of the oldest Greek merchant shipping companies operating today, and has been in operation since the late 19th Century. Its history begins in the era of sailing ships when the founder of the Company, Nicolaos D. Lykiardopulo, based on the Ionian island of Cephalonia, started a career as a deck hand in 1879 on sailing ships of Cephallonian owners Vyzantis. N.D. Lykiardopulo soon became a captain on merchant steamships of the prominent Vallianos family, and in 1890 he married Kate Rossolimos, a great niece of the wealthy Vallianos brothers. In 1897, with financial backing from his wife’s uncle Athanasios Vallianos, N.D. Lykiardopulo purchased his first steamship, the s.s. “ELENI MILLAS”.

As was frequently practiced in those days, the ship’s original name, as built for J. Millas & Fils of Cephalonia in 1892 by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons in Sunderland, UK, was maintained after purchase.
